The game has subsequently been regarded by critics as influential in the shoot 'em up genre. The game was ported to home computers as Bosconian '87 in 1987, and spawned two sequels: Blast Off in 1989, and Final Blaster in 1990. Bosconian became the first shoot 'em up game to feature diagonal movement.īosconian was commercially successful in Japan and received positive critical reception, but did not achieve the global commercial success of other shoot 'em up games from the golden age of arcade video games. The goal of the game is to earn as many points as possible by destroying enemy missiles and bases using a ship which shoots from both the front and back. In North America, it was manufactured and distributed by Midway Games. The space stations consist of six orbs and a bright red core. Destroy a whole formation for big points! Destroy the purple leader and his subordinates will flee. Sometimes the fighters will attack in formations of five. ![]() During Red Alert, tons of enemies will chase you. Spy ship - If this shows up and you let it escape, the enemy will be alerted to your presence. P-type - Tries to swing around from the sideĮ-type - Fired straight from a station's core. I-Type fighter - tries to smash into you. The "Abnormal behavior" shouldn't prevent you from playing. If you manage to beat level 255, the game rolls over to 0. You could max out your score on level 1.if you wanted.īosconian has a fairly complex set of rules for a shooter. ![]() Levels wrap like in Defender or the "secret passage" in Pac-Man. Asteroids have smaller hitboxes than mines. You don't want to be between several bases. When you begin a level, try and get to the outside. Mine explosions persist for half a second, and they're pretty large. You still get points of an enemy collides with mines or asteroids. There was also a sequel on CPC, C64, and ZX Spectrum. There's no pause button and it goes right back to the menu screen when you die, making it difficult to photograph the score. There are no voice effects, the levels are entirely different, and it's much too easy. It comes with a built-in stick but it's a pretty bad reproduction. I played Bosconian years ago on a Pac-Man plug-and-play system. ![]() The arcade machine is hard to find - consider yourself lucky if there's one in your area. Every fan of old-school shooters should give it a try. Valkyrie-Favor - 144,640 - NM50 (PC)īosconian is ahead of its time with voice effects, a mini map, and an awesome weapon that fires behind you and in front of you at the same time. Please post your scores, which round you died on, and which version you played. It came out in 1981 and it is pretty awesome. Bosconian is a multi-directional free-roaming shooter by Namco.
